About 

Opuntia pailana is a striking, shrubby prickly pear cactus native to Mexico. It is highly prized for its thick, blue-green pads, vibrant violet-to-red blushing in bright sunlight, and prominent shaggy white spines. It is known for its slow-growing, compact, and sculptural form, often blooming with brilliant yellow flowers in the late spring.

Care:

  • Light: Thrives in full, bright sunlight, which is necessary to encourage its characteristic vibrant purple blushing and spine production. 
  • Soil: Requires a highly gritty, free-draining mix (such as sandy loam amended with perlite or gravel) to prevent root rot. 
  • Watering: Drought-tolerant. It should be watered only when the soil is completely dry, and watering should be significantly reduced or stopped entirely during the winter months
