The ant-house plant, like everything else truly weird from the plant and animal kingdom, comes from Australia. The plant has a symbiotic relationship with ants: it grows hollow spaces in its bulb and leaves for golden ants to patrol inside, chewing up any leaf-eater bugs they find, and leaving behind excreta the plant can absorb in turn for nutrients. (You'll need to apply a liquid fertiliser twice a month in the summer and once every six weeks in the winter to mimic the effects.)
Pot size 12 x 10cm
- Light: This plant grows on the sides of trees underneath their canopy, and as a result is used to bright but filtered or dappled or indirect light.
- Water: A bit tricky -- it's planted in well-drained compost, but it wants a drink every few days. So think little and often as a watering policy. Ideally it should dry out every two or three days.
- Temp: The Ant-house hates a draft. Keep it above 18C at all times.
